A serotype signal is not a vaccine match

FMD virus is grouped into seven serotypes, and within each serotype into topotypes and lineages that continue to diverge. A country report that names serotype O is a real and useful signal. It is also several steps short of the question a procurement officer actually faces: will this specific vaccine strain protect against the specific field strain circulating here.

What closes the gap

• Laboratory characterisation of the field isolate, including lineage assignment.
• Vaccine matching evidence — for example r1 values from virus neutralisation or ELISA-based comparison against candidate vaccine strains.
• Evidence that the candidate strain is available as a registered, released product in a formulation appropriate to the target species and programme.

Serotype tells you the family. Vaccine matching tells you whether the relative is close enough to help.

Reference laboratory country reports are the right starting point for the first step, and they are deliberately careful about what they claim. Our serotype view mirrors that caution: it counts how many countries in the gap dataset carry a stated requirement for each serotype, by region, and it says plainly on the page that this is a signal only. Each country contributes at most one mark per serotype, so a polyvalent requirement never inflates into extra dose volume.

Why the discipline matters commercially

Strain mismatch risk is one of the few things that can turn a funded campaign into a failed one, and it is invisible in any model that stops at serotype. An analyst who presents serotype presence as vaccine suitability produces a recommendation they have no evidence for. We do not make clinical or suitability recommendations, and no figure in our workspace should be read as one.
